Easy Cabbage Kootu

This is very basic cabbage dish of Tamil Nadu and Kerala which we mostly have with rice. It can also be had with chapathi.

This method is followed for most of the vegetables like cauliflower, chow chow, snake guard etc..  Here is the recipe.

Ingredients :

Cabbage – 1 cup chopped
Raw Chickpeas – ½ cup
Toor dal – 1/3  cup
Grated Coconut – 4tsp
Cumin seeds – 2 tsp +1/2 tsp for seasoning
Green chillies – 2
Water – ½ cup
Oil – 2tsp
Asafoetida – a pinch
Curry leaves a few for seasoning
Cilantro for garnishing

Method:

  • Cook toor dal in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles. Keep them aside.
  • Soak the chickpeas for 8 hrs or overnight. Pressure cook it for 3 whistles and keep them ready.

  • Add chopped cabbage in ½ cup of water with salt and cook it for around 10 mins.

  • Add grated coconut, cumin seeds and green chillies to a mixie and grind them to a smooth paste.

  • Once the cabbage is cooked, add the ground coconut paste and cooked toor dal.

  • Also add the boiled chickpeas. Mix them well and let it boil. Garnish with Coriander leaves.

For seasoning, heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin seeds and curry leaves. Add this to the kootu and serve it with rice or rotis.

My Notes :

  • Take care that you dont add too much of water when cabbage is cooking, otherwise the dish gets watery and it takes a very long time to get the desired consistency.
  • Chickpeas can be replaced with green peas.
