Mixed Lentil Vada and Idli

I have heard of Mixed Lentils Vada also called as Thavala vadai (in tamil) from my mother-in-law but never got to try it.

Today gave it a chance and it turned out yummy !! I learnt it from her and also tried ti make idli out of this batter. This batter can also be used to make dosas also called as adai in Tamil.

Ingredients:

Toor dal – ¼ cup
Chana dal – ¼ cup
Urad dal – ¼ cup
Moong dal – ¼ cup
Raw rice – ¼ cup
Idly rice – ¼ cup
Red chillies – 4
Garlic – 4 to 5 pods.
Green chillies – 1
Ginger – 1tsp
Curry leaves – a few
Hing – a pinch
Onion – 1 small
Coconut (grated or chopped) – 2tsp
Baking soda – ½ tsp

Method :

Mixed Lentil Vada
  • Soak the raw rice and idli rice together for 2hrs. Soak each of the dals separately for 2hrs.

  • First grind the urad dal to a soft texture with little water.

  • Now add the raw rice, idli rice , toor dal, chana dal ,garlic and red chillies together( don’t add moong dal).Grind them to a coarse paste.

  • Take this batter into a bowl and the soaked Moong dal and all the remaining ingredients except baking soda.

  • The batter's consistency should be thick.
  • Heat oil for deep frying the vadas.
  • Pour a spoon full of batter into the oil Or else Pat the batter into vadas and deep fry in the oil.

  • Hot and Crispy vada is ready.

Mixed Lentil Idli

This batter can also be used for idlis. Soft and yummy !!! Healthy instead of deep frying. Before using for idlis, add baking soda and some water to the batter to get fluffy and soft idlis. If you dont like onions in the idi, Also you can take a portion of the original batter for idlis and avoid Onions.
  • Now add batter with baking soda to idli plates.

  • Steam it for 10 to 12 mins.
  • Yummy Mixed lentil Idli is ready.
  • Serve hot with sambar or chutney.

My Notes :

We add moong dal as such as it adds a crunchy taste to the vadas.
Also we can add grated carrots to the idlli batter for a change.
